Finally found it
the building with the Art Deco facade
where Lauren Bacall lived in Dark Passage
it was pretty easy...it's right at the end of these stairs and very easy to find if you're able to read a map and a traveller's guide (apparently I wasn't able, took me about 3 days altogether with approx. 3 full circles of Coit Tower and a close look around Telegraph Hill)
